Alcoholism disrupts and destroys families. It has been dubbed a family disease. The reason for this is because alcoholics have wives, they have children, they have brothers, sisters, mothers and other relatives who are all affected by their alcohol abuse. According to research done by the US Department of Health and Human Services, more than 75 million adults in the United States have grown up in families with alcoholics. This breaks down to approximately 25 percent of all families in the United States having at least one individual who is battling with alcohol abuse. Children with alcoholic parents have been shown to have lower self-esteem, higher occurrences of depression and increased feelings of guilt and loneliness when compared with children of the same age and same social and economical background of those who do not have parents who are alcoholics. Children who grow up with parents who are alcoholics usually have higher levels of stress and deal with bouts of nervousness and uncertainty. It is not uncommon for children who grow up in these conditions to have frequent nightmares and to continually wet the bed even into their early teens.
